Rules

  • Re-entry as per NFHS rules (see below)…
3-1-2   If a pitcher is replaced while his team is on defense, the substitute pitcher shall pitch to the batter then at bat, or any substitute for that batter, until such batter is put out or reaches first base, or until a third out has been made. To ensure that the requirements of this article be fulfilled, the umpire will deny any coach-defensive player conference that will violate the rule. If a pitcher is incapacitated or guilty of flagrant unsportsmanlike conduct, this rule is ignored. A player may be removed as pitcher and returned as pitcher only once per inning, provided the return as pitcher does not violate either the pitching, substitution or charged conference rule. If the pitcher, because of an injury or being incapacitated, is replaced as pitcher and the above rule is not satisfied, or if his replacement requires more warm-up throws than permitted in 6-2-2 Exception, he cannot return to the game as a pitcher.
3-1-3   Any of the starting players may be withdrawn and re-entered once, including a player who was the designated hitter, provided such player occupies the same batting position whenever he is in the lineup. The pitcher is governed by the provisions of Article 3-1-2 above. A substitute who is withdrawn may not re-enter. A starting pitcher who is replaced in the top of the first inning while his team is at bat shall be governed by the provisions of Articles 3-1-1 and 3-1-2 above.
  • A 10 run mercy rule after 7 innings is in effect for all regional playoff games.
  • Managers will receive two challenges per game.  (PDF) These are for reviewable plays…
    – Home run or boundary calls, including placement of runners
    – Fair/foul calls on balls hit into the outfield
    – Force plays and tag plays
    – Catch/trap calls on balls hit into the outfield, i.e., whether an outfielder cleanly caught a ball on the fly or trapped it just after it touched the ground
    – Whether a runner passed a preceding runner
    – Time plays, i.e., whether or not a run scored prior to the third out
    – Missed bases
    – Scorekeeping issues, including the count, number of outs, score, or substitutions
    – Whether a batter was hit by a pitch
    – Collisions at home plate (Rule 6.01(i))
    – Tag-ups
    – Interference on double plays
    – Spectator interference
  • In addition, the crew chief can use replay to review the following issues at any time, which is not considered a challenge:
    – The count, the number of outs, and the score
    – Substitutions
    – Batting out of turn
    – Rules check
  • Pre-game infield/outfield practice is limited to 7 minutes per team.  This provides roughly a 15 minute pre-game window for teams to get ready, leaving 5 minutes for the umpire meeting, ground rules, and any other pre-game ceremonies (such as playing the National Anthem, first pitches, etc.)  Ins and outs are to begin 20 minutes prior to scheduled game time.
  • Extra inning games will NOT begin with a runner at second base.
  • NO on-field batting practice will be allowed for host teams.  If sites have only a single batting cage, teams should coordinate with each other to ensure equal time or they can opt to hit at an alternate site nearby.  Site coordinators should assist in this effort where possible.
